People are trapped.
13 people, including a firefighter, were killed in a massive fire that engulfed several high-rise buildings at a residential complex in Hong Kong, the South China Morning Post reported. At least 16 other people were injured.
The fire engulfed several buildings of the Wan Fook Court residential complex in Tai Po district. Bamboo scaffolding and netting that surrounded the complex's buildings during the renovation caught fire.
It was initially reported that four blocks of the complex were burning, but the fire soon spread to all eight blocks of the housing complex. Authorities assigned the fire the fifth, the highest, level of danger.
What caused the fire is still unknown. Earlier, local residents complained about workers who smoked while working, the South China Morning Post reported.
The publication said police have received reports that people may remain in the buildings engulfed in flames. A pet rescue organization estimates that there may also be more than 100 pets in the houses that have caught fire.
The fire has not been extinguished so far. Amid the threat of the fire spreading, police evacuated two neighboring blocks.
