There's only two of them.
The Russian Navy's (Navy) two Project 945A Condor nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) - the K-534 Nizhny Novgorod and the B-336 Pskov - are useless marvels, according to a columnist for the U.S. publication of the National Security Journal (NSJ) Journal (NSJ).org/russias-twin-hulled-titanium-sierra-ii-submarines-are-just-useless/">publication of the National Security Journal (NSJ) Jack Buckbee.
The author reminds that the Project 945A Condor nuclear submarines have a double-hulled design made of durable titanium alloy, thanks to which they are capable of diving to great depths and have low hydroacoustic signature. "On paper, they were designed as elite Cold War submarine hunters capable of pursuing U.S. submarines in harsh Arctic waters. In practice, they play only a minor role in strategy," the columnist argues.
Buckby notes that because of the cost of titanium construction, only two Project 945A Condor submarines were built, which now occasionally participate in exercises but "do little to shape the global underwater balance of power."
The author nevertheless recognizes that from a technical point of view, the K-534 Nizhny Novgorod and B-336 Pskov are "titanium marvels" and are impressive because they "represent rare examples of engineering." "This is a serious machine with high performance, stealth and the ability to challenge enemy submarines at great depths and in Arctic conditions," the author writes, adding that "it doesn't matter."
