Moscow responded with the appearance of warships.
American B-52 strategic bombers have been training over Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania for several days. According to the Kieler Nachrichten, the planes are participating in the Bomber Task Force Europe mission, launched from the Moron base in Spain, writes BILD.
B-52s are among the most powerful aircraft in the U.S. arsenal. They usually fly over the Pacific Ocean or the deserts of Nevada, but now their routes take them over Rügen, Rostock and along the Baltic coast. The bombers' armament remains classified.
The U.S. Air Force says the purpose of the mission is to train jointly with European allies, including Finland, Lithuania and Sweden, and to "enhance coordination" in the region. One of the routes went almost to the Finnish-Russian border with air refueling.
Russia has already responded to the exercise: warships - the frigate Neustrashimy and the landing ship Alexander Shabalin - have appeared in international waters off the German island of Fehmarn.
