Pistorius predicts war between Russia and NATO.
NATO countries should be prepared for Russia to attack the alliance earlier than current projections of four to five years, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He said intelligence officials and military experts regularly assess the state of the Russian army to calculate when it has recovered to the point where it would be capable of striking a NATO country in the east. "We always assumed that this could happen in 2029. Now there are estimates that it is possible as early as 2028, and some military experts even believe that we had the last peaceful summer," the minister said.
Pistorius admitted that Europe realized the threat from Russia too late - in particular, it happened in 2022, when the invasion of Ukraine began. "It is now clear: Moscow has a serious adversary who acts as ruthlessly and imperially as possible," he stated. However, according to the minister, this does not mean that NATO will not be able to defend itself. "The alliance has a significant deterrence potential - both conventional and nuclear. In addition, we have combat-ready armed forces, but yes, they need to be equipped even better," Pistorius stressed.
He noted that the German army had been "in disrepair" for many years - its numbers had been drastically reduced and its infrastructure dilapidated - but the war in Ukraine changed this situation and now the challenge is to speed up the modernization of the Bundeswehr. "Putin makes no secret of his imperial fantasies in which our freedom and our order as we know it are irrelevant. We must respond quickly and decisively to this threat by strengthening our defense capabilities," he wrote.
