Russia Has Begun Disassembling Boeing Freighters To Repair Civilian Airplanes

By 2026, Russia's air fleet may be more than halved

"Aeroflot" received Volga-Dnepr airplanes for spare parts

Eight Boeing aircraft will go for parts for subsidiaries due to the shortage of spare parts and sanctions.

About this reports the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine.

"Russian cargo airline Volga-Dnepr and Aeroflot have signed an agreement on the transfer of eight Boeing aircraft to the latter. These aircraft will be used as spare parts donors to maintain the technical condition and continued operation of the existing aircraft in the carrier's fleet," the statement said.

The contract will transfer six Boeing 737-800BCFs and two Boeing 747-400s to Aeroflot's subsidiaries Pobeda and Rossiya Airlines for financial leasing. The amount of the deal is about $130 million and is financed by the Russian National Welfare Fund.

At the beginning of 2022, Russia had about 1,500-1,800 Western-made civilian airplanes in operation. Today this number has decreased many times over due to international sanctions that have closed access to foreign aircraft and spare parts.

The consequence of this is that Russian air carriers are forced to:

put aircraft "on the ground";

purchase spare parts through unofficial schemes, with no guarantee of quality and safety;

staff up serviceable aircraft for temporary repairs of other boards.

The contract between Volga-Dnepr and Aeroflot became the first in the Russian market when a passenger airline receives cargo planes exclusively for dismantling for spare parts.

"In the medium term, this will lead to a reduction in the aircraft fleet, an increase in the cost of transportation and further degradation of Russian civil aviation. If current conditions persist, Russia's aircraft fleet could be reduced by more than half by 2026," the intelligence agency said.
