Belarusian tennis player lost part of the rating points.
According to Mirror, the reason for the sanctions imposed on Belarusian tennis player Arina Sobolenko by the WTA international federation is a violation of the rules that require female athletes to participate in at least six WTA 500 tournaments per season. To fail to fulfill that requirement, there must be a valid reason, such as an injury.
Since Sobolenko failed to fulfill the requirement this year, she lost 10 points last week and another 120 after the Dubai tournament. She also lost 400 points earned at the final WTA 2024 tournament.
Sobolenko's main rival, Poland's Iga Swiatek, also suffered similar losses, losing more than 170 points from other events, as well as 400 points from the final tournament.
The sanctions also hit other famous tennis players - American Cori Gauff, Amanda Anisimova and Madison Keys.
Despite this, Arina Sobolenko remains a confident leader in the WTA world rankings. Earlier it was reported that she is among the top 30 most sought-after athletes of 2025 and is ranked fifth on the list of the world's highest-paid tennis players.
