America's Newest Supersonic Aircraft, The X-59, Has Made Its Maiden Flight

The latest X-59 QueSST supersonic aircraft, created by Lockheed Martin's Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) program, has successfully completed its maiden flight.

According to Flightradar24, it is not yet known whether the X-59 was able to break the supersonic barrier, but the debut flight likely tested key flight systems - particularly avionics , controls, landing gear and other components

American airspotter Jarod M. Hamilton released on the social network X (Twitter) pictures taken during the tests. As with most test flights of experimental aircraft, the X-59 flew with the landing gear released.

The main goal of the QueSST program is to create technologies that will reduce noise during supersonic flights, which could pave the way for the elimination of international restrictions on flights over populated areas.

The X-59's volume reduction is achieved through a special aerodynamic hull shape that minimizes the formation of shock waves. The main feature is an elongated, sharp nose, which reduces the force of the sound impact.

Even the waves that do form are much less intense than those of traditional supersonic aircraft.

The acceleration of the X-59 QueSST is provided by the F414-GE-100 turbojet engine, mounted on a 28.7-meter-long fuselage and wings with a 9-meter wingspan.
