An Unfinished Floating Crane Overturned In Crimea

Two people died and more than 20 were injured.

In annexed Sevastopol on Monday afternoon, a floating crane standing in the Southern Bay crashed, killing two people and injuring more than 20 others. This was reported by the Moscow-appointed head of the city Mikhail Razvozzhayev. The dead were an electromechanic and a sailor, writes The Moscow Times.

"While carrying out work on a floating crane on the territory of the Sevastopol Marine Plant, an abnormal situation occurred, resulting in the overturning of the vessel," he explained in a Telegram channel. Seven victims were hospitalized, the official added, noting that a special commission will investigate the causes of the accident.

The head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for Crimea and Sevastopol has opened a criminal case over the tragedy under the article on violation of safety rules for the operation of maritime transport, resulting in the death of several people (part 3 of article 263 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to law enforcers, the disaster occurred during the testing of the cargo device of the floating crane, which was not put into operation at the time of overturning.

According to the Ukrainian channel "Crimean Wind", we are talking about the heavy floating crane PK-700 "Grigory Prosyankin", which was laid down back in November 2018. In 2023, it became known that the hull of the structure was decided to be cut into pieces and sent by inland waterways to Severodvinsk for completion at the facilities of JSC PO Sevmash due to Sevmorzavod's inability to complete the construction on its own.
