The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has lifted a key restriction on Ukraine's use of long-range missiles supplied by Western allies. The decision effectively allows Kiev to strike targets on Russian territory and increases military pressure on the Kremlin, U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal.
On October 21, the Ukrainian military had already used a British-made cruise Storm Shadow missile to strike a chemical plant in Bryansk, the publication recalls.
As the WSJ notes, the U.S. authorization to use such missiles against targets in Russia came after the authority to authorize such attacks passed from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to the commander-in-chief of U.S. forces in Europe, General Alex Grinkiewicz, who also heads NATO's unified command in the region.
The reshuffle coincided with President Trump's initiative to increase pressure on the Kremlin and push it to negotiate an end to the war, including by possibly approving the delivery to Ukraine of U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles, which have a range of more than 1,600 kilometers.
