The Washington Post: Budapest Summit Derailed Before It Started
Putin and Donald Trump

It only took one phone call.

The story of the Budapest summit between Putin and Donald Trump, which ended without starting, gives a clear understanding of how exactly the US president should act to stop the war in Ukraine - he should press the Kremlin hard. This is according to an editorial article by The Washington Post (WP).

The publication's journalists note that plans for the summit in Hungary fell apart in less than a week. It only took one phone conversation between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov for the Americans to be convinced that the Russians had not abandoned their intentions to destroy Ukraine as a state.

It was a similar story with Alaska, the WP editorial board recalls. At that time, the Americans also thought that the Russians seemed ready to negotiate, but later it became clear that this was not the case. And when the Americans finally realized this, they began helping the Ukrainian campaign of strikes against Russian refineries with intelligence.

The Budapest summit, however, broke down before it started, because the Americans realized everything much faster. When Trump began considering sending Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, Moscow publicly spoke of the unacceptability of the move. In the end, everything culminated in a Kremlin-initiated phone conversation between Putin and Trump, following which the US president immediately took the Tomahawks off the agenda to "give diplomacy a chance." However, not even a week later, diplomacy failed.
