The European Parliament urged to increase pressure on Lukashenko.
On October 22, the European Parliament during the plenary session in Strasbourg debated on the situation in Belarus. Parliamentarians and European officials called for the release of all political prisoners and spoke of the need to maintain sanctions against the dictator, according to Charter97.org.
The European Union will continue to pressure the dictatorship, European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jorgensen said:
- The selective release of political prisoners (while a welcome development) is a tactical gesture, not a systematic change. Even despite these releases, repression against the Belarusian population continues unabated. Moreover, they have even intensified. Until we see change, we will not soften our position.
We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and an end to repression... The Belarusian authorities must also stop incommunicado detention and the brutal treatment of prisoners. Until we see dramatic changes in these areas, we will continue to put pressure on the regime," said Dan Jorgensen.
The European Commissioner recalled the fate of Belarusian opposition leader Nikola Statkevich, who refused to leave Belarus during the deportation of political prisoners:
- The case of political prisoner Nikolai Statkevich is of particular concern. After refusing to be deported from Belarus after his release on September 11, his whereabouts are unknown. A UN panel of experts said he could be a victim of enforced disappearance. We call on the Belarusian authorities to immediately report his whereabouts and eventually release him without resorting to forced deportation from Belarus.
MEPs also spoke about the Belarusian opposition leader. Lithuanian lawmaker Vytianis Andriukaitis noted:
- After his release, Nikolai Statkevich refused to leave his country and his people, but went missing. There is a high probability that he is presumably back in prison.
Dutch MP Teis Reuten also recalled Nikolai Stakevich and called for stronger sanctions against the regime:
- Imagine being months and years without knowing anything about your loved ones, convicted on trumped-up charges and imprisoned in harsh conditions. This is the reality under the brutal regime of Putin's puppet Lukashenko. This is the reality of the family of opposition leader Nikolai Statkevich, who was released about six years ago and is now back in prison incommunicado.
We demand an immediate end to the systematic repression of the Belarusian people and the unconditional release of all political prisoners. Strengthen sanctions and do not forget about Belarus. Live Belarus!
About the thousands of political prisoners remaining in the walls, Polish MP Mariusz Kaminski reminded:
- Unfortunately, the release of Sergei Tikhanovsky is not a sign of change in Belarus, but a cynical game of the dictator. Minsk prisons are not being emptied; on the contrary, the regime continues to hold thousands of political prisoners. Our actions against Lukashenko must be tough and consistent. Sanctions against Lukashenko's regime must be maintained and continued.
Polish lawmaker Andrzej Halicki noted:
- Alexander Lukashenko is a dictator. Alexander Lukashenko is a usurper. And he knows and we know that in 2020 he lost the election and stole the presidency. The sanctions are working. Alexander Lukashenko's place is in front of the international tribunal in The Hague. Remain calm and keep applying sanctions.
Polish MP Michal Szczerba spoke about the future of Belarus:
- Belarus is not doomed to the nightmare of Lukashenko's dictatorship and dependence on Putin's Russia, to cooperate with evil. I dream of a free and democratic Belarus, deciding its future on the basis of the will of society, integrating into Europe and living in friendship with its neighbors.
