Lithuanian Cyclist Refused To Climb The Podium With A Russian Woman

She declared her support for Ukraine.

In the Netherlands, Lithuanian cyclist Daiva Tushlaite-Ragajinskienė won the silver medal at the World Rowing Championships in the 35 to 39 age group.

First place went to the "neutral" Daria Pravilova. During the award ceremony, bronze medalist from Belgium Elke Timperman climbed the first step of the prize podium next to the Russian for a joint photo, while the Lithuanian remained in her seat.

In a comment for "Tribuna" Daiva explained why she refused to stand next to the Russian.

"My decision was spontaneous, but sincere. I respect all athletes, but even though the athlete was competing under a neutral flag, I saw clear symbols and gestures that indicated a connection to Russia - in particular the singing of the Russian anthem on the podium when the neutral anthem, Beethoven's Ode to Joy, was officially played.

For me, this moment was not about politics, but about human values and respect.

Standing aside was my quiet way of expressing that I do not accept what Russia is doing and that I support Ukraine, admire the courage and strength of Ukrainian athletes and people," Tushlaitė-Ragazhinskienė said.
