The president of the United States spoke to the laurette.

Nobel Prize winner Maria Corina Machado called US President Donald Trump and said she accepted the award in his honor. This was revealed by Trump himself, writes Reuters.

"The person who won the Nobel Prize called today, called me and said: "I accept it as a sign of respect for you because you really deserve it. That's very nice of her. I didn't say, 'Then give it to me,' although I think she might have done that. She was very gracious," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on October 10 after receiving the award.

The US president acknowledged that the committee's decision was actually focused on 2024, when he was running for president, but said his contributions to peace were so great that he should have been awarded the prize anyway.

"I ran for president in 2024. But there are those who say we've done so much that they should have done it [giving the Nobel Peace Prize to Trump]," the American leader said.

Ahead of that, a White House spokesman criticized the Nobel Committee's decision, saying that by giving the award to someone other than Trump, the committee proved that it "put politics above peace."

Reminder, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan politician, social activist and philanthropist Maria Corina Machado "for her tireless work to promote the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle for a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

U.S. President Donald Trump also claimed the prize. He has repeatedly said so himself, and countries grateful to him have also joined in. In August, the White House published a list of foreign leaders who supported Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Among them are the president of Azerbaijan, the prime minister of Armenia, the prime minister of Cambodia, the president of Gabon, the prime minister of Israel, the government of Pakistan and the foreign minister of Rwanda.

But as experts have previously said, Trump had little chance of winning the peace prize, including because of his attempted rapprochement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
