The region may receive the status of autonomy following the example of Gagauzia.
Moldova's accession to the European Union may take place together with Transnistria. However, if pro-Russian forces had won the elections, the integration process would have been stopped.
Romanian President Nicusor Dan said this, according to DiGi24.
The Romanian leader said the elections in Moldova were "mandatory" given what could have happened if pro-Russian forces had won the elections.
"Then the accession process would have been stopped, as it happened in Georgia," he said.
Nicusor Dan said it was very difficult for the Russian army in Transnistria to change troops and weapons, but if parties loyal to Moscow had won the election, the Russian army in Transnistria would have been strengthened.
"This whole army could have been strengthened and posed a threat to Moldova, Ukraine, including Romania. You can't bring equipment there now, being between Ukraine and Moldova," the Romanian president explained.
He specified that further technical discussions on Moldova's accession to the EU will take place.
"I think it can be done with Transnistria, now, with a status similar to that of Gagauzia, with relative autonomy within the Republic of Moldova. Transnistria can have the same in this regime. The border of the European Union will be with these two autonomous regions," he explained.
Dan also emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova are coordinating the calendar of negotiations, and the problems with Hungary regarding Ukraine's accession, according to him, will not affect Moldova's steps.
"There is this difficulty with Hungary, which opposes Ukraine's accession, and there is this discussion regarding a possible disengagement, which I don't think will happen soon, because it would be a very bad signal for Ukraine. Then steps will start to be taken for Moldova regardless of the official opening of the accession chapters," Nicusor Dan added.
