The President of Ukraine cited a historical example.
Ukraine throughout its history has been repeatedly attempted to be conquered by those who wanted to "exterminate Ukrainians from the world," but the country has always revived and survived all its invaders, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has said. "All attempts to wipe Ukraine and Ukrainians [off the face of the earth] ended with hostile empires falling apart," said Zelensky on the occasion of the Day of defenders and protectors of the country.
According to him, at this historical stage Ukraine will definitely stand up against Russia as well. At the same time, he reminded that this is not the first time Ukrainians defend themselves against Moscow, but this time "most effectively." "It is now that we need to defend ourselves so that our children - all our children, all future generations are guaranteed to be free from war, from terror, from strikes, from any threats," Zelensky emphasized. He assured that after the war ends, Ukraine will not lose the strength it gained during the conflict, as well as "global support, which was always so lacking in the past times."
The Ukrainian president added that the country will always need defenders and protectors. According to him, since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, almost 124,000 Ukrainians have already received state awards for the protection and defense of the state and people. At the same time, Zelensky signed decrees on awarding state awards to more than 1.6 thousand more representatives of the Armed Forces, National Guard, intelligence, Security Service, Border Guard Service, National Police, rescuers and others.
Before that, Zelensky once again ruled out territorial concessions to end the war. "Russia will not outline new borders in Ukraine," he emphasized. At the same time, the Ukrainian president admitted that it is possible to move to a diplomatic settlement of the conflict, starting from the current line of contact. In particular, he said that a ceasefire could be agreed upon at his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The latter said earlier that he saw no point in meeting with Zelensky, as it would be impossible to agree with him on recognizing the occupied territories of Ukraine as Russian. As sources close to the Kremlin told Reuters earlier, Putin demands that Kiev surrender Donbass completely in exchange for freezing the front line in the Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions. He also insists on Ukraine's nuclear-free and non-aligned status.
