The AFU have attacked a section of the front line, which had been relatively quiet recently.
On Sunday, Russian and Ukrainian troops launched separate but simultaneous attacks in different directions in Kursk region. Forbes analyst David Axe writes that perhaps one attack could thwart the other, however, the results of these attacks will only be seen in a few days.
‘Did the Ukrainians know the Russians were coming? Did the Russians know the Ukrainians were coming? It is hard to say, and it may take several days before the smoke dissipates and the motives and results become clear,’ he writes.
As the analyst notes, the Ukrainians have advanced by two miles, but it remains to be seen whether they can entrench and hold the positions they have gained. At the same time, the Russians attacked with large forces of armoured vehicles, targeting the northwestern edge of the Kursk bulge near the villages of Malaya Loknya, Leonidovo and Sverdlikovo. Fighters from the 155th and 810th Marine Infantry Brigades and the 106th Airborne Division took part in this attack, involving about 40 vehicles in total, which made it the largest since the AFU invasion.
At the same time, Axe notes, the Russians have predictably been attacking the Kursk bulge with the same brigades and regiments in the same areas since October. At the same time, the Ukrainian attack hit a section of the front line that has been relatively quiet recently, and therefore could have been more unexpected.
‘Some Russian channels have recently warned of the Ukrainian forces building up near Kursk and a possible offensive,’ said Rob Lee, an analyst at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. ‘But apparently the build-up was far enough away from the site of the possible offensive so that the Russians could not prepare a special defence’.
In addition, the Ukrainian offensive was led by sapper vehicles, and armoured trucks and combat vehicles were used for transportation, they dropped off infantrymen and then returned to the main Ukrainian line.
