Former Puppet Theater Director Recently Convicted of 'Extremism' Dies In Belarus
Dzmitry Harelik

He was 63 years old.

Today, January 2, the former Homel Puppet Theater director, Dzmitry Harelik, died. He was 63 years old. His friends reported this on social media, Zerkalo writes.

Dzmitry Harelik graduated a construction technical school. But at the same time, he organized an amateur group in the Teacher's House. When the cooperative movement began in the second half of the 1980s, he and a friend created a cooperative that made theater puppets for sale to kindergartens, schools, and amateur clubs. For some time he worked as a technical supervision engineer, and on June 1, 1992, he became the director of the Homel Puppet Theater.

This crew has been working in Homel since 1968. It was under Harelik that it received a new building in 2002 and moved there two years later. As noted on the website, "the theatre's touring and festival geography covers the area from the Atlantic coast of Spain to the Pacific coast of Vladivostok, from the capital of the Komi Republic to the island of Sri Lanka. <…>. The theatre has repeatedly become a laureate and diploma winner of various International Theater Festivals in Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Latvia, Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Germany, India, Sri Lanka and other countries." In January 2024, Harelik was tried under Part 2 of Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses (Distribution of Extremist Materials). Human rights activists never found out what the man was accused of or what decision the court made. In August of this year, it became known that Harelik was fired. It is unknown exactly when this happened. As of May 14, 2024, the position was already vacant. By the way, the position of director remains vacant.
