According to the Latvian Ministry of Defense, a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle crashed in the Rezekne region on Saturday. Currently, the responsible services, including the State Police, are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

The Latvian Ministry of Defense indicates that, according to preliminary data, this is a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle of military significance. According to the National Armed Forces, the drone entered Latvian airspace from the direction of Belarus.

The NAF recorded the arrival of the unmanned aerial vehicle in Latvia, and also monitored its movement and established the crash site, the department emphasizes. The investigation into the situation is ongoing.

The commander of the National Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Leonids Kalniņš, told LETA that the drone entered Latvian airspace early Saturday morning and was immediately spotted.

"We were assessing and monitoring the situation, how dangerous it was and whether objects and civilians could be endangered," Kalniņš said.

According to preliminary information, the object in Latvia did not pursue any "hostile goals." According to Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, a representative of the Russian embassy will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry on Monday.
