China Refuses To Supply Trains To Belarus

The reason has been named.

Due to US sanctions risks, China has finally refused to supply 15 new trains to Belarus.

In June, China postponed the delivery of 15 new BKG2 freight electric locomotives to Belarus, which were supposed to be delivered at the end of 2023.

It was reported then that the new delivery dates had been postponed to 2025-2026. However, as the Belarusian Railway Community has now found out, China has refused to supply these trains to Belarus due to fears of sanctions.

According to documents that were at the disposal of railway workers, the manufacturer of these trains, the Chinese company CRRC Datong Co., Ltd., “did not provide a commercial offer due to the presence of American parts in the locomotives” and “in July 2024 indicated the impossibility of further progressing the project due to sanctions concerns.” It also proposed returning to the implementation of the project after the “normalization of the situation.”

It is known that a replacement for these trains will now be sought in Russia, where the only alternatives to the BKG2 can be locomotives produced by JSC Transmashholding (TMH) and OJSC Sinara-Transport Machines (STM). It is significant that already on September 5, 2024, the management of JSC Transmashholding came to Minsk to meet with BelZhD, with whom a working meeting was held on the topic of "further mutual cooperation in updating the fleet of rolling stock and equipment."
