Armenia Reports Coup D'etat Prevention

The participants were trained at the “Arbat” military base in Russia.

The National Security Service of Armenia announced the disclosure of preparations for a coup d'etat. The country's Investigative Committee is investigating the criminal case.

According to the investigation, several citizens of Armenia and former residents of Nagorno-Karabakh and unidentified persons prepared to seize power. By prior agreement, the defendants in the case recruited a number of citizens of Armenia and former residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to undergo three-month training in Russia in order to study new types of weapons, learn how to use them, and then carry out combat duty after returning to Armenia and train other persons. The remuneration during the meetings was about 220 thousand Russian rubles per month.

The recruited persons went to Rostov-on-Don, from where they were transported to another location, where they underwent testing, including a polygraph. The training took place at a military base called “Arbat”. The recruits were given training in indoor combat.

“In addition, they were told that the purpose of the training was to return to the Republic of Armenia and remove the current government,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Some of the recruits spoke out against this and refused to participate in the planned coup. Two defendants in the case tried to resolve the situation by formally denying the purpose of the training.

“However, some of the recruits refused to participate in the training and returned to the Republic of Armenia, and S.G. and other members of the criminal group were unable to complete the crime due to circumstances beyond their control,” the committee added.

A criminal case has been opened against seven people, three have been detained, and four have been put on the wanted list. Active measures are being taken to identify the remaining defendants.
