ISW Explains Why Belarusian Military Keep Talking About Possible Attack By Ukraine

A simple explanation.

Belarus continues to spread narratives in which it portrays Ukraine as a threat.

This is stated by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) in a new report.

According to analysts, with such actions, the Lukashenka regime is trying to maintain tension on the Ukrainian-Belarusian section of the border in order to pull some of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units away from the front.

Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus, Major General Uladzimir Kupryjanyuk, said on July 5 that Ukrainian troops had amassed 15,000 personnel near the border of Belarus with Ukraine and that Ukrainian troops “continue to carry out provocative actions in this area.”

Lukashenka's military said that Belarusian forces “will strengthen their positions near the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, but will not escalate the situation.”

“Belarus has previously supported the Kremlin’s information efforts to raise Ukrainian concerns about escalation along the Belarus-Ukraine border after Russia used Belarus as a springboard for a full-scale invasion in 2022, seeking to use these concerns to encourage Ukraine to draw forces from elsewhere along the border,” ISW recalled.
