The EU Calles On The Lukashenka Regime To Release All Political Prisoners

Immediately and unconditionally.

The EU responded to information about the release of some political prisoners. The European External Action Service said in a commentary that they “takes note of the release of a number of political prisoners in Belarus.” But they also noted that they remember about other prisoners, writes euroradio.fm.

“There are still more than 1,400 political prisoners in Belarus, including prisoners who are deprived of the opportunity to communicate with other people, who are in complete isolation, as well as prisoners with serious health problems, the disabled, the elderly and minors, and people with mental illness,” the statement reads. The authors of the document called on the Belarusian authorities to “immediately and unconditionally” release all political prisoners.

It is worth noting that there are much more political prisoners in Belarus than the figure presented by human rights organizations. The Investigative Committee announced more than 10,000 protest-related criminal cases, which allows us to assess the real scale of repression.

Human rights activists are simply unable to count the number of political prisoners in Belarus, and there are many questions about the criteria they use in assessing the people who are being thrown behind bars today.
