Council Of Europe Elects General Secretary

Council Of Europe Elects General Secretary
ALAIN BERSET

A Swiss politician has become its secretary general.

On Tuesday, June 25, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) elected a new Secretary General of the organisation - it became a Swiss politician, former Chairman of the Federal Council of Switzerland Alain Berset.

This was reported by the PACE press service.

Berset was elected in the second round of voting for the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe, he gained the minimum required 121 votes of PACE delegates.

There were three candidates for the post: Berset, former Estonian Culture Minister Indrek Saar and European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

The Swiss was also the favourite in the first round of voting and won the support of 92 national delegates in the Parliamentary Assembly. Saar received 79 votes, while Reynders received 70.

This is the second attempt for Reynders to compete for the post of CE Secretary General: in 2019, he lost the election to Marija Pejčinović-Burić.
