Belarus Has Growing Problem That Scares Lukashenka

It can't be ‘curbed’.

Trade distortions are growing in Belarus: imports exceeded exports even more in October. This follows from the data of the National Statistics Committee, writes ‘Zerkalo’.

Foreign trade turnover of Belarus totalled $71 billion $605.5 million in January-October. Thus, exports grew by 5.4% over the same period last year - up to $34 billion $15.4 million, while imports added 7.1% to almost $37.6 billion over the same time period.

The difference is $3 billion 574.7 million in favour of imports. A month earlier, the difference was $2 billion 426.2 million in favour of foreign goods.

What officials say about the problem and how Minsk is trying to hit imports

It's not the first year officials have been fighting imports, but they have difficulties with it. Meanwhile, Belarus is getting closer and closer to Russia on foreign trade.

In mid-August this year, the Ministry of Economy told about the reason for the difficulties in foreign trade: imports of goods are ahead of exports. The ministry believes that among other things, oil and potash prices are ‘to blame’ for this. We remind you that earlier this ministry blamed the problems in foreign trade, including the population - because of the increased demand for imported goods.

Aliaksandr Lukashenka drew attention to the problem in foreign trade on June 17 this year - it alarms him. The same day, Prime Minister Raman Halouchanka explained why imports exceed exports. In his opinion, ‘there's no catastrophe.’ ‘If we talk about the reasons, they are also prosaic - the world price of oil has increased, respectively, we buy crude oil, so it has played into the increase in the cost of imports,’ said Raman Halouchanka earlier.
