The flights deliberately avoid Turkey.
The private Belarusian airline Rada Airlines regularly flies to Benghazi, Libya, despite international sanctions. Our country is likely to be involved in a complex network of arms transportation for the warlord Khalifa Haftar, head of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Aeroin writes.
The mysterious flights began after Haftar's son, Saddam Haftar, arrived in Belarus in October 2024. During this visit, he was accompanied by Brigadier General Muhammad al-Manfur al-Amin, who commands the Aviation Academy in eastern Libya.
The first flight took off in November from the former Belarusian airbase in Benghazi on an Il-62 aircraft converted to transport cargo. The aircraft, registered as EW-450TR, took an atypical route: it skirted Turkish airspace and flew over Iran, Iraq and Syria. The next day, the plane returned to base, this time via the shortest route over Turkey.
As the publication suggests, such complex logistics were needed to hide the nature of the cargo, presumably weapons, from Turkey and avoid inspections. The reason is that Ankara supports the national unity government in Tripoli, which is opposed by the LNA led by Khalifa Haftar.
“This activity demonstrates a complex system of military support in Libya and the use of loopholes in international sanctions, which complicates control. The participation of Belarus in the transportation of weapons underlines the urgency of the situation and the need to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means,” Aeroin writes.
