The event will be attended by the Chinese ambassador to the United States and his wife.
Yesterday it became known that the elected US President-elect Donald Trump invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to his inauguration on January 20. However, the Chinese leader will not come as a guest.
This is reported by CBS News.
The Chinese ambassador to the US and his wife are expected to attend the event, as is customary. In addition, CBS sources said additional officials from Beijing may join them.
‘Inauguration officials have assigned staff to handle diplomatic protocol at the festivities,’ the outlet added.
Xi's invitation, delivered outside official diplomatic channels, caught both Beijing and US allies by surprise. Chinese officials, who are used to strict protocol and acutely aware of the power dynamics between the US and China, were left wondering about Trump's intentions. The invitation came during an already tense period between the countries.
Several Western diplomats were surprised by the decision to invite Xi, given the differing views on China among members of Trump's team. The officials said it could be a source of tension both within the administration and in geopolitical relations.
