American analysts have revealed the details.
Due to the poor attitude of the Russian military command to soldiers and officers, a very high level of desertion is recorded in the Russian Armed Forces. This is stated in the report of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) for November 20.
The report cited a publication by the Russian opposition publication of Important Stories, which reported that according to an internal document of the Russian Ministry of Defence, more than 1,000 Russian servicemen, including officers, had deserted from the Russian 20th Motorised Rifle Division (8th Combined Arms Army, Southern Military District). It is noted that as of April 20, 2024, this was significantly more than the personnel of the battalion.
As the journalists noted, the command of the 20th Independent Motorised Rifle Brigade (IMRBr) asked the Ministry of Defence for help in returning deserters and interviewed personnel from the 33rd and 255th Motorised Rifle Regiments of the 20th IMRBr, who attributed the desertion rate to heavy losses, the lack of promised payments to soldiers, and the practice of sending wounded and sick soldiers to the assault.
‘These complaints reflect frequent complaints by Russian ultra-nationalist military bloggers about the Ministry of Defence's poor treatment of servicemen, and the apparent internal document indicates that the defence establishment is aware of the extent of morale problems among Russian soldiers,’ the ISW report said.
The Russian opposition publication of Mobilisation News released footage on November 19 showing soldiers of Russia's 36th Motorized Rifle Brigade (29th Air Army, Eastern Military District) speaking directly to Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov with complaints that their commanders were sending them on an assault without reconnaissance or artillery support.
The Russian soldiers claim that they have to spend their salaries to buy their own equipment and fortification materials because the military command does not provide them.
