Serbian President Refuses To Go To BRICS Summit In Russia

Vucic preferred a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, following the Brazilian leader, has announced that he will not take part in the BRICS summit to be held in Russia's Kazan on October 22-24. He explained his decision by the meetings scheduled for these dates, as well as ‘various things’ that complicate his visit to Russia.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic told Radio and Television Serbia that he would not go to Russia for the BRICS summit, but promised to send a government delegation in his place.

He explained that just these days he is hosting Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Belgrade. Vucic said that the visits of all these politicians were planned even before receiving the invitation to the BRICS summit.

According to the Serbian leader, he discussed the issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

‘I was honest with President Putin and told him, ‘Mr President, even if there were no these visits, it would be very difficult for me to come because of different things you know about and I believe you understand Serbia,’ Vucic said.

He did not specify what he meant by these ‘things’, but he reminded that Serbia has not joined the European sanctions against Russia.

We remind you that earlier Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva cancelled his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit.
