The Kremlin Is Concerned

Putin fears South Korea's reaction to the DPRK's deployment to Ukraine

Recently, information emerged that DPRK troops had been deployed to Russia. Now the Kremlin fears that South Korea will provide military aid to Ukraine.

This was reported by the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Analysts write that the Russian Federation, apparently, is trying its best to reduce tensions with South Korea. This happened after credible reports began to appear about the intensification of cooperation between North Korea and Russia. Including warnings from South Korean and Ukrainian intelligence that a contingent of North Korean troops had been deployed for training in the Russian Federation.

In particular, in connection with this information, the South Korean Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian Ambassador to South Korea Georgy Zinoviev. However, the Russian Embassy in South Korea falsely presented this event as a voluntary meeting, and not as a diplomatic challenge. The department also stated that cooperation between the Russian Federation and the DPRK "is not directed against the security interests" of Seoul.

In addition, Kremlin Speaker Dmitry Peskov said that Russia's cooperation with North Korea "should not cause concern" for other countries, and that information about the alleged presence of North Korean troops in Russia could be "contradictory."

ISW Conclusion

According to analysts, the Kremlin's apparent desire to reassure South Korea that its cooperation with North Korea does not pose a threat to Seoul suggests that the Kremlin remains very concerned about the prospect of a potential turn by South Korea toward providing Ukraine with the necessary military support. It also points to the Kremlin's concerns about the implications of worsening relations with Seoul for Russia's security interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

"Russia has previously sought to woo Seoul to mitigate the impact of its growing dependence on North Korea," ISW added.
