Oil Tanker On Fire In Baltic Sea

A tanker with 640 tons of oil caught fire near the German resort of Warnemünde.

The Annika tanker, loaded with 640 tons of oil, is on fire off the coast of Germany in the Baltic Sea near the seaside resort of Warnemünde. The fire on the 73-meter tanker is being extinguished by a marine rescue cruiser and two auxiliary ships, the emergency management of the German Federation and federal states reported on Friday, October 11.

Seven sailors who were on board the tanker under the German flag were rescued and taken to shore. According to the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS), smoke rising from the burning tanker is “visible at a large distance from the coast.” The service also reported that it received a signal about the fire after 9 a.m. (10 a.m. Minsk time), and the crew was evacuated from the tanker an hour later.

The rescue operation was taken over by the emergency command in Cuxhaven. Fire crews were transported to the site by helicopter.

According to the Environment Ministry of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the crew members were not injured. The cause of the fire in the Baltic is still unknown.
