The former head of Nagorno-Karabakh, Ruben Vardanyan, has been arrested in Azerbaijan, according to the country's state security service.

Vardanyan is accused of financing terrorism, participating in the creation and activities of armed formations or groups not provided for by Azerbaijani law, and illegal border crossing.

The Azerbaijani State Security Service's statement says that in September 2022, the former head of the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh government "illegally crossed the state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan outside checkpoints to commit acts of terrorism and sabotage and entered the territory of the temporary residence of Russian peacekeepers in the Karabakh economic zone".
