Boryslav Bereza: Repetition Of Operation Valkyrie In Kremlin Is Possible
Boryslav Bereza

There are quite a lot of people in Russia who hate Putin.

Ukrainian media reported that Russian officers helped lead the attack on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol, although dozens of invaders were killed there.

How many Russians agreed to cooperate with Ukraine? Charter97.org website talked about this with Ukrainian politician and former member of the Verkhovna Rada Boryslav Bereza:

– No one is surprised that Russians are using the situation for their possible enrichment or saving their lives today. When we see that a Russian helicopter, as a result of the GUR (Ukrainian Defence Intelligence) operation, gets from Russia to Ukraine, when we see that Russian officers are ready to take money that can provide life for their families and for them to survive, and in return they ensure that they direct attacks on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, we understand that this is a systemic phenomenon.

Moreover, a large number of Russians absolutely do not perceive this war as a fair and honest war. Therefore, they believe that it is easier for them to stay alive and make money from the fact that Putin is waging a war against Ukraine. Such Russians believe that if the President of the Russian Federation earns money together with his oligarchs, then what’s wrong? They don’t care about their colleagues, they don’t care about Russian slogans about the war and they don’t care about everything except their survival and their provision. The Russians will continue to act this way in the future.

Let's be honest: we have been receiving information about the location of any unit or warehouse from the Russians for a long time. When I served in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Zaporizhzhia direction, Russian officers sold information about the location of a depot in Tokmak, which was later destroyed.

– Why is this happening? What are the reasons?

– It can be assumed that there is some kind of internal opposition or opposition activists integrated into the Russian army. But rather, in this case, I suspect that it is enrichment that plays the main role. If it were just internal opposition, then they wouldn’t take money for spotting the headquarters.

But there are quite a large number of people who carry out railway sabotage in Russia, they help find or set fire to enterprises that are part of the Russian defence industry. Russian citizens actively suggest points that drones or reconnaissance and sabotage groups should hit. One thing's for sure - there are quite a lot of people in Russia who, out of hatred for Putin, his regime and the war that was unleashed, are ready to help Ukraine absolutely free of charge. Ukraine takes advantage of this and is grateful to such people.

– Could at some point such collaboration among Russians become one of the decisive factors in Ukraine’s victory against the occupying army?

– I would not say that this is collaborationism, it’s rather a resistance movement. I would like to remind you that during the Second World War, even in Nazi Germany there was an anti-fascist movement, which also included representatives of the military elite. You can remember Operation Valkyrie, for example, when German army officers tried to kill Hitler and stop the war. Similar situations are possible now.

Sooner or later, they may create a certain internal movement that will somehow help Ukraine defeat Russia even faster. But considering that Russia is a totalitarian police state where everyone is under surveillance, I have great doubts that they will be able to transform into a greater force.

However, the principle of a thousand cuts has not been cancelled. If a target is inflicted with many small cuts, it will bleed, become exhausted, and finally be defeated. Therefore, the same thing will happen here: the more such Russians are there, the more such cuts there will be and the faster the war will end. Consequently, there will be fewer casualties on both sides. So, helping Ukraine and ending the war, defeating the Putin regime, is to the Russians' advantage.
