The text of the MEP’s letter to the judge who will consider Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk’s case.
MEP from Portugal, the godparent of political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk Isabel Santos, called for the release of the European Belarus Civil Campaign activist. She sent a letter to judge Stanislau Ivaniutenka from the Rechytsa Court, where the Belarusian activist will be tied again on October 2.
Charter97.org publishes the text of the letter:
“It is with great concern that I address you in this letter, following the upsetting reports I have received on the case of Mrs. Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk.
In January 2021, Mrs Sharenda-Panasiuk was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, under three articles of the Criminal Code: Article 368 of the Criminal Code (“Insulting the President”), Article 369 (“Insulting a public officer”), and Article 364 (“Violence or threat of violence against an officer of the Interior”), being kept in the women’s colony in Homiel, since August 2021.
In April 2022, a new case was brought against Mrs. Sharenda-Panasiuk, under Article 411 of the Criminal Code (on malicious disobedience to demands of the administration of a penal institution), sentencing her to yet another year in prison.
I hereby appeal to your sense of humanity towards Mrs Sharenda-Panasiuk, mother of two minor children who desperately need her. The prolonged imprisonment and the conditions of the punishment cell have caused physical strains and the deterioration of her health.
I sincerely request that you consider dropping these new charges and releasing Mrs. Sharenda-Panasiuk immediately and unconditionally.”
