Kevin McCarthy had been in office for less than a year.
Members of the US House of Representatives have removed the Speaker for the first time in history, backing the resignation of Kevin McCarthy. He had held the post for less than a year.
There were 216 votes in favour of McCarthy's resignation, including eight from representatives of the Republican Party, and 210 against.
The U.S. House of Representatives must now elect a new speaker, but according to CNN, there is no clear alternative candidate who has the support to win, according to CNN.
McCarthy's ally, Republican Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, will serve as interim speaker of the lower house of Congress.
Before that, the White House coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby assured that regardless of the decision on McCarthy's resignation, the US Congress will approve new aid to Ukraine.
The proposal to fire McCarthy was put forward by the representative of the Republican Party Matt Getz because of the slow pace of legislation to fund the government, writes Reuters.
For their part, Democrats consider McCarthy unreliable after he did not go for a spending deal with President Joe Biden, and are outraged by his decision to give the green light to a presidential impeachment investigation without a preliminary vote, the Voice of America writes.
McCarthy, a Republican, became speaker of the US House of Representatives on January 7. It took four days and 15 historic voting attempts to support him - it was the longest speaker election in the US in 164 years.
On September 30, McCarthy removed $6 billion to support Ukraine from a bill to temporarily fund the US government in order to pass the document and avoid a shutdown - a suspension of the functioning of the government. He said the issue should be considered separately later.
