Vitsebsk Political Prisoner Malakhouski, Suffering From Cancer, Chained Up
ULADZIMIR MALAKHOUSKI

He fully denies his guilt.

Uladzimir Malakhouski, political prisoner suffering from cancer, has been kept in the Vitsebsk pre-trial detention center for almost half a year. On May 25, the regional court will consider his appeal against the decision of the Pershamaiski district court, which found Malakhouski guilty of using violence against police officers and sentenced him to three and a half years in jail, Vitsebsk Viasna reports.

Malakhouski was detained in Vitsebsk on September 13, 2020, during the crackdown on a peaceful procession. He was severely beaten and had his finger was broken during his detention. A criminal case under Article 364 (Violence or threat of violence against officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs) was initiated against him. The man was kept behind bars for six days, after which he was released on his own recognizance not to leave. Shortly before the trial, in January 2021, he was arrested again.

At the trial, the Vitebsk resident said that he had never fought nor resisted anyone. But when he was attacked by several policemen, he was holding someone in order not to fall down. A policeman took his pepper spray canister in the paddy wagon and accidentally pressed it. When the gas sprayed out, the policeman started to shout that he was about to get poisoned.

Malakhouski did not plead guilty and stated that the evidence was falsified. Judge Tatsiana Rodzina sentenced him to three and a half years in a colony.

The wife of a political prisoner was able to see him five times while her husband was in the detention center. What she saw shocked her.

"He's on a chain there! He says this is such an article. He's sitting in handcuffs on a chain and talks to me through a tube. Chained, you know? And handcuffed. What's that? As if he could run away somewhere!" - Iryna is indignant.

At the request of his wife, Malakhouski was taken to the oncology center for a checkup. He wrote to his wife that they also took him to the doctors in chains.

Iryna Malakhouskaya says that soon her husband will be sent to the Medical Rehabilitation Expert Committee (MREC). She assumes that they want to revise his disability group and deprive him of his pension.
