Natallia Radzina: If Belarusians Do Not Help Their Media, They Will Read Foreign ones

Charter-97 editor-in-chief Natallia Radzina has given notice of the threat to the information resource’s work because of dramatic reduction in in funding.

The current situation is caused by the reduction of foreign funds’ support and the partial blocking of the website in Belarus, the editor says in her interview to Radio Racyja:

– The support from Western funds that support democracy, including in Belarus, has sharply declined. This is happening against the background of improving relations between Western officials and Lukashenka’s regime. A lot of Belarusian independent media are in a very difficult situation now. There is a sharp decline in support for both independent media and the entire civil society. I see this as a threat to the entire journalistic community in Belarus.

Poland and Lithuania continue to support the information resource, but this assistance is not enough to ensure the normal operation of Charter-97. Immediately after the appeal to the readers, money started to arrive in the bank account," – Natallia Radzina says:

– We are already getting help. We are very grateful to every person who has transferred at least a dollar. Today, there is really such a situation that, if Belarusians do not help their media, they will have to read foreign ones. So, thanks to all of you and let's be together, let's save and support each other!

According to Charter-97 editor-in-chief, because of the blocking in Belarus, the possibilities for self-financing have also decreased. Nevertheless, the site has already managed to return more than half of the readers. "People actively bypass the blocking of the site, as they are on the lookout for free information," – Natallia Radzina notes.
