People have learned to bypass the blocking.
Vitsebsk human rights activist Lesnid Svetsik stated that, commenting on the Charter97.org blocking on the territory of Belarus:
– As a human rights activist, I believe that any restriction of the media is a very shocking thing. The blocking of Charter 97 restricts citizens' right to disseminate and receive information, which must be available to a greatest number of people.
I note that such actions of the authorities are part of their state policy. Obviously, they wish Belarus to have as few independent media as possible. Such practice has been on since the beginning of the 90s, when the people, who are in the government now, came to power. Since that time, they have been restricting the operation of the independent media. They started in Minsk and reached the regions gradually.
Now, for example, there are no independent print media in Vitsebsk at all. There are several sites that can be put on the list of independent ones, but it’s extremely hard for them to work.
It is not a secret that Charter 97 is one of the most popular sites, which has been working on dissemination of accurate, independent information since its foundation. The site covers all the aspects of what is happening in Belarus: the economy, politics, cultural and social life and so on.
And Charter97.org covers the events fully, independently, without fear of reprisals from the authorities. Therefore, the site has multimillion audience, which receives independent information every day.
I want to say that my friends, as well as me, have bypaseed the blocking of the site. People have regained the opportunity to read Charter 97". I, for example, have download Tor, which allows to read Charter97.org in full.
