Zelenskyy Sparked Curiosity With A Statement About A Summer That Is Crucial For Ukraine
Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Ukrainian positions on the front line are strong.

The negotiations and decisions made at the EU, G7, and NATO summits in June and July of this year could have a significant impact on the war.

According to Charter97.org, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this during a press conference with his Estonian counterpart Alar Karis.

“We need decisive diplomatic action so that Russia does not think the war can still yield anything. Ukraine’s positions on the front lines are strong. Russia is losing more than 30,000 of its soldiers every month, either killed or seriously wounded,” the Ukrainian leader noted.

Zelenskyy also noted the far-reaching impact on Russian logistics, oil refining, and military production.

“In the temporarily occupied Crimea and parts of Russia, there is already a gasoline shortage, and in some places there is no reliable communication. The Russian budget is in tatters. We must keep up the pressure and bring Russia back to the diplomatic track,” he emphasized.

The President of Ukraine noted that Europe needs a strong voice in the negotiations and must be among those making decisions. He added that the United States is also ready to join the diplomatic processes.

Risks of a Ceasefire with Russia

Zelenskyy stated that the first step toward ending the war should be a ceasefire with Russia; however, for Ukraine, this poses a significant risk in certain sectors of the front.

“The ideal solution in peace talks is to end the war immediately. At the very least, taking the first step—a complete, unconditional, and total ceasefire—is important. And then let the diplomats do what they were trained to do, as they say in Ukraine. Let them sit down and negotiate,” he said.

At the same time, the head of state acknowledged that a ceasefire is a complex process and it won’t take effect the day after it’s agreed upon.

Zelenskyy explained that today there are kill zones of 20, 30, and 40 kilometers, which are expanding with the development of drone technology.

“Let’s imagine that tomorrow we declare a ceasefire. We understand perfectly well what Russia will do if we don’t have guarantors to monitor the ceasefire. Russia will take advantage of the fact that the kill zone is no longer a kill zone because there is a ceasefire, and they will advance 20 kilometers. In some parts of Ukraine, this is a major risk,” he noted.

Monitoring missions in Ukraine

The President of Ukraine emphasized that this is precisely why Ukraine advocates for an unconditional ceasefire. According to him, the guarantors who will be at the negotiations must establish their own monitoring missions and ensure the actual ceasefire.

“I believe this is the first point of the ceasefire. As I told you, it is already very technically complex in and of itself. And this is the first step; as for the other steps and the roadmap for ending the war, let the diplomats handle all that,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

In his view, for a more effective ceasefire, a meeting should take place at the level of the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and, preferably, the United States. At the same time, the president noted that the aggressor country has not yet demonstrated a willingness to do so.
