A lot of things have to happen.
U.S. President Donald Trump's meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will depend on progress on peace in Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this in comments to U.S. media, according to Sky News and Fox News.
Rubio said today's meeting between U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Whitkoff and Putin "was productive" but needs to "continue to make progress." Trump, the secretary of state noted, has shared the results of those talks with several European leaders.
"We will also be having talks with our European allies and the Ukrainians over the next few days to see what progress we can make on that side. And then hopefully, if things continue to progress, there will be an opportunity very soon for the president to meet with both Putin and Zelensky at some point, hopefully in the not too distant future," he said.
At the same time, Rubio did not rule out a phone conversation between Trump and Putin within the next few days. But for now, he said, no phone conversations are scheduled.
The secretary of state added that "a lot of things have to happen" before a meeting between the leaders can take place. However, he said, it is necessary for Trump to "come in and make an agreement to end the war."
"So we still have to get close enough to that point for such a meeting to be productive and worth having. Today was a good day, but we have a lot of work ahead of us. There are still many obstacles to overcome, and we hope to do that over the next few days and hours. Perhaps weeks," Rubio said.
We recall that after Whitkoff's visit to Moscow, Western media reported that Putin offered to meet with Trump "at some point". The latter responded that he would be willing to do so as early as next week.
