The Area Of Forest Fires In Russia Is Almost Equal To The Territory Of Montenegro

It is 2.5 times more than last year.

Russia's forest fire zone has expanded to 1.2 million hectares (12,000 square kilometers), nearly the size of all of Montenegro (13,800 square kilometers) and larger than countries such as Qatar (11,500 square kilometers), Jamaica (10,900 square kilometers) and Lebanon (10,400 square kilometers). km), writes The Moscow Times.

The total area of fires in the country has increased 2.5 times compared to last year, the Federal Forestry Agency (Rosleskhoz) said. According to the agency, since the beginning of 2025 on the territory of the Russian Federation recorded about two thousand forest fires, the number is 1.2 times higher than in 2024. Officials attributed this situation to the early end of winter and significant fires in the Trans-Baikal Territory, which accounts for 80% of all forest fires this year.

"The forest fire season began a month earlier in 2025, it shifted from our usual April to March. This is, of course, due to weather conditions, low-snow winter and lack of moisture in the soil," the Federal Forestry Agency said. The agency added that the main causes of the fires were grass burning and careless handling of fire by local residents.

With large-scale forest fires on the background, the authorities of Transbaikalia declared a regional emergency regime on April 7, and on April 23 it was raised to the federal level. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations on May 14, the area of forest fires in the region has grown to 629 thousand hectares. Firefighters are fighting 49 natural fires, 14 fires on more than 120 thousand hectares have been localized.

Since May 13, the emergency regime of regional level was also introduced in Buryatia. On the morning of May 15, the region was trying to cope with 20 forest fires on a total area of more than 58 thousand hectares. In addition, the state of emergency was declared this week in Shimanovsky district of Amur region. On Tuesday, a forest fire approached the closed town of Tsiolkovsky, near which the Vostochny Cosmodrome is located.
