Romanian President Iohannis Announces He Is Resigning

Presidential elections in Romania are scheduled for May 4.

President of Romania Klaus Iohannis announced he was resigning from office on Wednesday, February 12.

This has been reported by Romania Insider.

“To spare Romania and its citizens from this crisis, I am resigning from the office of President of Romania. I will leave office the day after tomorrow, February 12,” the president said in a statement on Monday, February 10.

On February 10, Romania was supposed to consider an initiative by the Romanian opposition to terminate the mandate of President Iohannis, who remained in office longer than expected due to the restart of the election procedure.

Iohannis' mandate as president ended on December 21 after the results of the Romanian elections were annulled due to Russian interference. Since then, he has continued to serve until a new head of state is elected.

Presidential elections in Romania are scheduled for May 4.
