Sanctions against the dictator will be raised to the level of anti-Russian sanctions.
Against the background of warming relations between the U.S. and the Belarusian dictatorship and weakening of U.S. sanctions against Lukashenko's regime, the European Union plans to tighten its measures against Belarus. This is reported by DW.
It is noted that the EU has begun to prepare a new, already 20th package of sanctions against Russia. On Friday, Lithuanian Finance Minister Kristupas Vaitekunas and European Commissioner for Financial Services Maria Luis Albuquerque discussed the issue at a meeting.
The Lithuanian politician said that Europe should increase pressure not only on the Kremlin, but also on its ally in Belarus. Especially given the "regular hybrid attacks" that Lukashenko's regime is staging against its neighbors.
In Vaitekunas' opinion, the EU should bring sanctions against Belarus in line with those imposed against Russia. In turn, Commissioner Albuquerque said that the preparation of new measures against Belarus is still at an early stage.
"We are working with third countries, as among them there are those that facilitate the circumvention of sanctions," she said.
