The Russian Foreign Minister has fallen out of favor.
The absence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov from a meeting of the Russian Security Council has caused a wave of panic and gossip in Moscow - so powerful that the Kremlin has had to comment publicly on the situation, CNN writes.
Dictator Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitri Peskov assured reporters on Friday that Lavrov "of course continues to hold the post of foreign minister" and called reports of his possible resignation "false."
The cause of the rumors was the chief diplomat's conspicuous absence from Wednesday's Security Council meeting, when Putin discussed the prospect of resuming full-scale nuclear testing. According to the propaganda media, Lavrov was "absent by agreement," but it was this fact that caught the attention of observers, as he was the only permanent member of the Council to miss the meeting.
Suspicions were heightened when it emerged that Lavrov would not be leading the Russian delegation to the G20 summit in Johannesburg. Instead, Putin assigned a junior official - Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration Maksim Oreshkin - to represent Russia.
Analysts immediately started talking about possible disagreements between Lavrov and the Kremlin - especially after a failed attempt to organize a meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest. Lavrov was one of the chief negotiators in the process, but the summit was frozen after he spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
