US Temporarily Allows Hungary To Buy Russian Oil

Orban managed to reach a deal with Trump.

Hungarian companies that import Russian oil and natural gas will not be subject to U.S. sanctions over the next year, a White House official said Friday, according to Radio Liberty.

The decision was announced after a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Washington. Preventing the imposition of secondary U.S. sanctions against Hungarian companies that buy Russian oil and natural gas was one of the main goals of Orban's visit. Continued energy imports from Russia are vital for Hungary, he said. Orban had previously said their absence would "bring the Hungarian economy to its knees." Donald Trump has said his administration is considering the issue because Hungary is finding it difficult to get oil and gas from other sources.

According to the IMF, Russia accounted for 86 percent of Hungary's oil imports in 2024. The loss of this energy source could lead to a 4 percent drop in the country's GDP. However, according to a study by the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) and the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), Hungary could abandon Russian oil, replacing it with oil from the Adria pipeline through Croatia.

Hungary and Slovakia are the only EU members that continue to import Russian oil. In late October, Donald Trump's administration imposed sanctions against Russia's largest oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil. Foreign companies that continue to buy their products after November 21 may become subject to U.S. secondary sanctions.
