Sweden May Finance Part Of Deal For 150 Gripen Fighters For Ukraine

This was stated by the Swedish Minister of Defense.

Sweden may finance part of a deal for Ukraine to buy up to 150 Gripen E fighter jets through military aid.

Swedish Defense Minister Paul Johnson told Reuters.

The Swedish defense minister Paul Johnson.

The Swedish defense chief said the financing was moving forward and Stockholm was working closely with the Ukrainian side.

He said Kiev's ability to finance the planes from its budget after the war would be a central part of the agreement, but there are other ways.

"We can look at export credits, frozen Russian assets and our aid program to Ukraine, which is 40 billion crowns next year and 40 billion in 2027," Jonsson said.

He said Sweden had presented the agreement to leaders of a "coalition of the willing" countries, suggesting that some of them might be willing to help finance the planes.

"Perhaps countries that have subcomponents of the Gripen system will have additional incentives to finance the deal," Paul Jonson said.

Reuters notes that the Gripen is equipped with engines from the U.S.-based General Electric Corporation as well as many British-made components.

Johnson said Sweden was pushing for talks with other European Union countries on using €200 billion of frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine's war effort.
