UK Names Number Of Prisoners Released By Mistake

The figure is impressive.

More than 100 prisoners a year are wrongly released from prisons in the UK. This was stated by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice Alex Davies-Jones on Times Radio.

She specified that the prisons in question are those in England and Wales. A total of 57,000 people a year are released in these regions, about 114 (0.2%) of them by mistake.

Davies-Jones emphasized that such incidents are unacceptable, but attributed them to the critical state of the prison system. According to the official, British prisons have few places for inmates, are understaffed and use an outdated paper-based record-keeping system. This problem is difficult to solve in the short term, but the government will soon launch reforms to modernize the system, the MoJ spokeswoman assured.

Davies-Jones also sharply criticized the governments of previous British prime ministers for poor funding and lack of new prison places, calling these conditions a legacy of 14 years of decline. She added that the kingdom has seen an increase in deportations of foreign lawbreakers, including those deported immediately after conviction.
