Russia's foreign minister was blamed for disrupting the summit with Trump.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov appears to have fallen into disgrace in the Kremlin after a failed conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that derailed a summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
The 76-year-old Lavrov, who has headed the foreign ministry for more than 20 years, did not show up at a landmark meeting of Russia's Security Council, which Putin held on Nov. 5.
At the meeting with permanent members of the Security Council, which includes Lavrov, Putin instructed to work on proposals to resume nuclear tests, which Russia last conducted in 1990. Lavrov was "consensually absent" from the meeting, a source told Kommersant. The foreign minister was the only permanent member of the Security Council to miss the landmark meeting.
At the same time, Lavrov lost his status as head of the Russian delegation to the G20 summit. This year, it will be headed by Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Administration Maksim Oreshkin, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said Thursday. Putin made the decision to appoint Oreshkin, he said.
