U.S. Moves Troops To Damascus Air Base

It's part of Washington's broad strategy after the change of power in Syria.

The US is preparing to station its forces at an airbase in Damascus to monitor a future security agreement between Syria and Israel. This will then be part of Washington's broader strategy after the change of power in Syria.

This was reported by Reuters.

Six sources familiar with the matter said the United States was preparing to deploy a military presence at an airbase in Damascus to help oversee a security pact Washington is negotiating between Syria and Israel.

The U.S. plans for a previously unreported presence in the Syrian capital would ostensibly be a sign of Syria's strategic realignment with the United States after the fall last year of longtime leader Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Iran.

The base is located at the entrance to southern Syria, where they plan to establish a demilitarized zone as part of a non-aggression pact between Syria and Israel. That agreement is now being negotiated through the administration of US President Donald Trump.

According to the publication, Trump will meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on Monday - the Syrian leader's first official visit to Washington.

Six sources familiar with the situation, including two Western officials and a Syrian defense official, told Reuters that the US plans to use the airbase to monitor a future agreement between Damascus and Tel Aviv.
