Putin Instructed To Start Preparations For Resumption Of Nuclear Tests

The first after a 35-year hiatus.

Putin has instructed the Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry, special services and civilian agencies to prepare proposals on the possibility of preparing for nuclear tests - the first after a 35-year break. He made the statement during an operational meeting with permanent members of the Security Council in the Kremlin.

The agencies have been instructed to "collect additional information on this issue, analyze it on the platform of the Security Council and make coordinated proposals on the possible start of work to prepare for nuclear weapons tests," Putin said.

Members of the Security Council cited U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to the Pentagon to resume nuclear testing as justification for the move. Last week, the White House chief said the US was going to conduct "some testing," without specifying, however, whether he was referring to the underground explosions that took place during the Cold War.

As Charter97.org wrote, the US is preparing to test the Minuteman III ballistic missile. It is capable of carrying a nuclear payload and forms the basis of the U.S. strategic deterrent.
