Juozas Olekas thinks the crossings should be opened.
As soon as the problem with smuggled weather balloons from Belarus can be solved, the border should be opened, says Lithuanian Seimas Chairman Juozas Olekas. He points out that there have been no balloons from the territory of Belarus in recent days.
"Regardless of the reaction of the Belarusian regime, we still want life to go on and the borders to be opened again someday," LRT reports LRT the words of Social Democrat Olekas.
In his opinion, although closing the border has an effect in taming smugglers, it prevents people from living a normal life.
"We would like this border to be open so that our people can travel, so that our carriers can reach these points, /.../ because cargoes from all over Central Asia pass through it," the politician explains.
A week ago, the Lithuanian government decided to close the border with Belarus until November 30. This came after a series of mass balloon launches with contraband - in some cases, more than 200 balloons were launched. As a result, Lithuanian airports were closed four times during the week.
